Google Drive users are losing files they’ve stored on the cloud, prompting engineers to issue a warning to not make any changes while the case is being investigated and addressed.

Google’s cloud storage solution is one of the most reliable options out there for storing user data on the cloud. However, it is far from perfect, as what users are seeing with the accidental data loss they are encountering right now.

Per Android Police, multiple Google Drive users are reporting missing files from their accounts. More recently, on November 21, a South Korean user reported seeing their account revert to May 2023, subsequently losing months of data in the process.

A Google Drive employee responded to the concern, stating that the case would be investigated and would provide a follow-up with updates.

Meanwhile, a team member of Google Drive is asking users not to disconnect their account or delete or move the app data folder.

More specifically, the following app data folder, depending on the operating system:

  • Windows: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\DriveFS
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS

However, it is being encouraged that users make a backup of their app data folder.

Although multiple complaints might suggest that the issue affects everyone, it appears that the number of affected individuals is fewer than it seems.
